Overhead Line Worker - Certificate
Upon successful completion of 25.5 units of course requirements and 2000 hours of related work experience, students will be eligible for the Overhead Line Worker Apprenticeship approved by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Apprenticeship Standards.
Graduates are employed as Overhead Line Workers, a high-level Way, Power, and Signal maintenance position in the mass transit field. An Overhead Line Worker working at a transit agency can train and promote to Overhead Line Worker Foreperson as the next step in the Way, Power, and Signal maintenance career path.
Depending on qualifications, the Overhead Line Worker can also apply for a range of other transit occupations.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Students will perform inspection, maintenance and repair of major overhead line components of a light rail system; and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in good operational condition.
- Students will demonstrate effective safety protocols in a high voltage rail system environment. Students will interact effectively with a diverse community of coworkers in order to meet and exceed service delivery objectives.
To earn this certificate, students must complete the minimum required courses with a grade of C (or P) or better.

Career/Transfer Opportunities
Career opportunities for qualified persons entering the public transit industry are very diverse. Depending on the student’s career interest and courses taken, coach operator graduates find employment as coach operators, light rail operators, dispatchers, supervisors; and are eligible to transfer to other public transit careers such as maintenance, scheduling, or information technology (IT).
