VTA Apprenticeship: Public Transit Leader
Earn a Certificate
Upon successful completion of 18 units of course requirements, graduates will be qualified to perform leadership duties at the field level across multiple job classifications within the Operations Division of a transit agency.
These duties include apprenticeship mentoring/instruction; and/or field level positions with leadership responsibilities, such as lead worker, foreperson, dispatcher, or supervisor.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate basic working knowledge of the functions, inter-relationships, and teamwork required for effective Transit Operations functioning.
- Students will utilize positive methods and take responsibility for solving problems at the field level whenever possible, within the chain of command.
- Students will interact effectively with a diverse community of coworkers in order to meet and exceed service delivery objectives.
Students must complete the minimum required courses with a grade of C (or P) or better.

Career/Transfer Opportunities
Career opportunities for qualified persons entering the public transit industry are very diverse. Depending on the student’s career interest and courses taken, coach operator graduates find employment as coach operators, light rail operators, dispatchers, supervisors; and are eligible to transfer to other public transit careers such as maintenance, scheduling, or information technology (IT).
